Young Goodman Brown | Analysis
Young Goodman Brown | Analysis The conflicts between the everyday battles and forces of good and evil are portrayed the story, Young Goodman Brown. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many symbolic elements, from the characters names in the story and throughout until its delusional ending. They show us that sin is a part of human nature and that no man is perfect beyond any means. The presence of evil appears as Brown begins on his journey. He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind it. Forests are used to symbolize wickedness, evil and danger. The road that is to be travelled is very dark and small, and it is enveloping him as it closes swiftly behind him, displaying the abandonment of his faith. What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow! This symbolizes that he is, in fact, walking along side the devil on this dreary road into the forest. Moments later a companion appears, Young tells him, Faith kept me back awhile, which explains that he had been faithful to his beliefs for some time, and then decided to cross over to the evil world. This said; it could be that this companion is in fact the devil himself, when his staff is noticed, bore the likeness of a great black snake, so curiously wrought, that it might almost be s een to twist and wriggle itself, like a living serpent. The staff being referred to as a serpent, can be compared to the serpent in the story of Adam and Eve. This is an excellent reference to how certain things in life can be deceitful, and the knowing of what is right and wrong. There comes a point in the story where Goodman Brown states, Is that any reason why I should quit my dear Faith, and go after her? This is when he begins to question his journey on the road between good and evil. It is then suggested by his companion, Sit here and rest yourself awhile; and when you feel like moving again, there is my staff to help you along. The devil is now leaving behind the sole key and the permission for Brown to join him in the world of evil and corruption, and then he walks away. This plays out in life as it is known today. As Browns journey into the forest continues, he hears voices and decides to hide. It vexed him the more, because he could have sworn, were such a thing possible, that he recognized the voices of the minister and Deacon Gookin, jogging along quietly, as they were wont to do, when bound to some ordination or ecclesiastical council. This is a symbolization of betrayal. With the Minister and Deacon out in the forest in the middle of the night, and the previous symbols involving the devil, Goodman Brown might have a feeling of being betrayed by his faith and feel alone. While he still gazed upward, into the deep arch of the firmament, and had lifted his hands to pray, a cloud, though no wind was stirring, hurried across the zenith, and hid the brightening stars. The thought of being abandoned overcomes him and he begins to pray to the heavens but is surrounded by the forest and its evils. The cloud symbolizes the dangers of allowing your surroundings, family and friends to become a blind fold and shield ones eyes from their beliefs. Eventually young Goodman Brown reaches the circle of the wicked, their voices joined in song. This dreadful anthem was joining the sounds of the nature and wilderness around him. Fire is represented here, which could also symbolize the anger and the passion for the fight of good and evil. The devil now begins his sermon, Depending on one anothers hearts, ye had still hoped, that virtue were not all a dream. Now are ye undeceived! Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome again my children, to the communion of your race! Even from the beginning of the story, it is foreshadowed that this whole story is in fact a dream. Hawthorne states in the beginning A lone woman is troubled with such dreams, gives an indication that this is a dream. Also, the reference to evil being a nature of mankind and of it being your only happiness is extremely wicked and satanic. The ending of the story does in the end rest the mind that this was in fact a dream. A stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate man, did be become, from the night of that fearful dream. It appears that the realization of disbelief in his faith, Brown woke up and lived the rest of his life as a bitter and untrusting man. And this states that the devil got the best of him. Nathaniel Hawthorne does an excellent job utilizing symbolism in this story to depict a real life battle that many of the human race struggle with everyday. The dark forest that Brown traveled, was not just a setting in the story, but an illustration of the journey though everyday life. And Young Goodman Brown shows us that it is easier to get side tracked on the right paths and travel on the wrong side.

To Kill A Mockingbird, Movie Vs. Book Essay -- Compare Contrast Haper
To Kill A Mockingbird, Movie Vs. Book Neither the novel nor film version of To Kill A Mockingbird is superior to the other, just different. In the book you delve more into the separate characters while in the film you see the relationships in action. The book gives you a broader view of everything, but at the same time the movie points out everything that seems important. Lastly, the novel shows Scout as a girl caught in the middle, when the movie seems to paint Scout as a girl without a inkling of what is going on. à à à à à The book shows the separate characters. In the novel you see The whole character by what they say. Cal can be described as a teacher to the children. She shows them the way that others live when she takes them to her church in chapter twelve. She also remarks that ââ¬Å"...Donââ¬â¢t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this houseââ¬â¢s yoââ¬â¢ compââ¬â¢ny...â⬠(p.24) this says that everyone is important no matter who they are. The statement ââ¬Å"I know all that, Scout. It was the way he said it made me sick, plain sick.â⬠(p.199) shows how much Dill really understands of what is going on. Jem is basically the same person in both the movie and the book. He seems to be the distant, yet loving, brother. à à à à à Although the book shows the individual people, the movie shows the relationships in action more than the book. The movie shows Cal and the children in action. It shows how they act around each other, the looks and the tones of voices that are being used, that can chang...

Cultural Diversity in Nibelungenlied, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh :: comparison compare contrast essays
Cultural Diversity in The Nibelungenlied, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh Cultural diversity is something that mankind has experienced since the dawn of time. Different cultures and different people have different views on the same issues, and it all adds to the diversity that is life. It shows that there is something for everybody. For the most part, there is no one person saying that everyone has to be this or follow that. A person's culture is determined on how they are brought up, what country they live in, how their parents were raised, and what the people around them do and believe in. The differences in culture is what caused people of later time to believe in more that one God, something that, for the most part, is unheard of today. It lead to Feudalism and the divine right to the throne. Different people are brought up to think different things, and the things people learn as a child stick with them forever. Culture is also based on choice, and every person has the choice to do whatever makes them happy. So much is know about culture now becaus e it has been recorded in books such as Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Nibelungenlied. Three different books displaying cultural views from three different time periods. And it is with works like these that modern scholars and historians can examine what the people and times were like back then. Two books with a similar time period were those of The Nibelungenlied and Beowulf, both placed in 6th century Europe, one based in England and the other in Germany. Both cultures had a history of war, almost a passion for it. The English had no fear for what they might battle, and knew the consequences like every skilled knight should: "However great an army we take, the Queen has such dreadful ways that they would all have to die through her arrogance." (The Nigelungenlied, Ch. 6, pg. 54) But knights had to know the risk involved in being one of the best, and the sacrifices that needed to be made to put their country on top. And it has been shown that both cultures took pride in their work: "Then the king ordered eight gold-bridled horses to be led onto the floor, into the enclosure; on one of them was a saddle skillfully decorated, ornamented with jewels." (Beowulf, lines 1036-1038). It can be seen in both Beowulf and The Niblungenlied that the quest for expansion of one's country is one of importance.

Comparing The Elements of Style and Style Toward Clarity and Grace :: Compare Contrast Comparison
Comparing The Elements of Style by Strunk and White and Style Toward Clarity and Grace by Williams Both The Elements of Style by Strunk and White and Style Toward Clarity and Grace by Williams emphasize the importance of ââ¬Ëstyleââ¬â¢ in writing. Though they agree style is important, their approach and views of style differ. Stunk and Whiteââ¬â¢s book was published in 1912 and was written for the old-fashioned ivy leaguers. This can be expressed by their use of the pronoun ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢. According to Strunk and White ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ should always be used. Williamsââ¬â¢ book was published in 1981 and in more culturally written. Williams states that a writer can use either ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësheââ¬â¢; whichever is socially acceptable. He also tells the writer to use such words as police officer instead of policeman and mail carrier instead of mailman. Strunk and White feel that to be a good writer one must adhere to the rules they state in their book. Jeri Eleswedââ¬â¢s blog states that she was amazed that she already incorporated many of the rules in Strunk and Whiteââ¬â¢s book into her own writing. They feel it is important for the writer to have an individual style ââ¬Å"â⬠¦what your are, rather than what you know, will at last determine your styleâ⬠. (Strunk 84) Strunk tells the writer that he should sympathize with the reader, but never seek to know the readerââ¬â¢s wants. The duty of the writer is to ââ¬Å"please and satisfy yourself and a true writer always plays to a party of oneâ⬠. (Strunk 84) In Patty Clarkââ¬â¢s Blog spot she gave a great statement about Strunk and White. ââ¬Å"The voice in which this little book is written sounds like an old-fashioned schoolmasterâ⬠. I completely agree with her and when I read their book I picture my twelfth grade English teacher at the bl ackboard with her fancy chalk holder cramming grammar down our throats. Williamsââ¬â¢ views on style are more diverse. According to him, style should be more about the audience the writer is writing to rather than the writer himself. Williams explains how to write or the reader. In his last chapter Williams states how to write in a constructive voice, how to the flow of information affects the reader, what words to use when the reader has prior knowledge of the subject and when he or she does not, and how to be clear for the reader.

Persuasive Memo Essay
ABC Corporation takes pride in being an ethical workplace both for the wellbeing of our company and our audiences. In an attempt to improve its policy on company ethics, ABC has set forth a new set of ethical guidelines for interpersonal communication on the workforce. It is crucial, that as a whole, we avoid ethical pitfalls in corporate communication for it can substantially degrade our working environment and neglect the companyââ¬â¢s interests. Unethical Communication As an employee, it is extremely important that you recognize unethical communication. At ABC Corporation, we promote independent thinking from all employees; we believe no employee should be a victim of groupthink (when group pressures prevent an employee from questioning, or speaking-out). Unethical Writing Many accounts of unethical behavior in the workplace are witnessed in our employeesââ¬â¢ writings. It is important to write with a conscience and reflect on your writing by asking yourself these three questions: What ideals do I want to stand for? To whom am I obligated? What will/could happen to others or/and to me? When writing a document, report, email, etc., it is necessary to take into account all of your obligations as an employee, a person, a businessman and a coworker. When communicating to the public, ABC Corporation expects your message to be ethical, clear and concise. Unethical practices include: Suppressing knowledge Hiding conflicts of interest Exaggerating claims Falsifying data Stealing information Misusing electronic information Exploiting cultural differences Intercultural Communication It is crucial to be sensitive (e.g.: culturally sensitive) and concise, while presenting your message in an inoffensive manner. At ABC Corporation, intercultural communication is witnessed daily between coworkers and clients. As a sender or receiver of a message (oral or written) it is crucial that you understand key cultural differences between you and the other person. Failure to recognize cultural differences, might lead to cultural exploitation, and perhaps place you or the other person at a disadvantage. Unethical v. Legal It is important to note that there have been laws instituted for unethical practices. However, laws do not necessarily provide a code of ethics for communication. Lying by omitting, for example, is unethical, though not technically illegal. The laws instituted for ethical communication have their ââ¬Å"gray areasâ⬠; therefore, it is crucial for you to have a sense of integrity when communicating in the workforce. Plagiarism Plagiarism is an absolute violation of ABCââ¬â¢s code of ethics. Taking credità for someone elseââ¬â¢s work (apart from being utterly unethical) will ruin your reputation as an employee, and most likely lead to further repercussions. When using a source, it is extremely important to use proper citations to avoid plagiarism. Information written under the companyââ¬â¢s name is exclusively owned by ABC Corporation, thus making it unlawful to copy or distribute (even if it was written by you). Reporting Unethical Conduct As an employee, it is up to you to decide how or when to report ethical abuses. I believe it is important to inform you that there have been laws instituted for the employeeââ¬â¢s protection if he/she decides to come forth with an allegation. When reporting an ethical dilemma it is critical to take the proper steps and avoid overreacting to the situation because overreaction may cause much unneeded controversy. ABCââ¬â¢s new and improved ethical standards make ground for an exceptional workforce and a superior corporation. As a company, it is crucial that we maintain a favorable working environment and constantly seek improvement. It is our intention to improve our working conditions and make ABC Corporation an impeccable business.
Look Not Only at The Now Essay
Shinichi Hoshi tells a great tale of irony and human stubbornness in the short story, ââ¬Å"He-y, Come on Ou-tâ⬠. A great storm that hits a small town and destroys their shrine which leaves a gaping hole where it once stood; the villagers quickly figure out that the bottom of the hole cannot be found. A concessionaire buys the hole and people pay to dump very terrible things into it such as nuclear waste and incriminating evidence, but in the end it all ends up getting dumped on the village from the sky. Humans like to and tend to throw away future worries and enjoy the immediate benefits of a situation regardless of how dire the future situation may be, Hoshi expresses this by using symbolism and irony in his short story ââ¬Å"He-y, Come on Ou-tâ⬠. Humans have caused and will cause dire circumstances for themselves by overlooking potential future threats in any given situation; this is conveyed in the short story through symbolism. When the hole is first found a young man says, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËI wonder if itââ¬â¢s a foxââ¬â¢s holeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Hoshi 1). The fox symbolizes the villagers because foxes are seen as sly and the villagers think they are sly when they make a scheme to dump everything in the hole and profit from it without consequence, there is further symbolism when it is technically the village at the bottom of the hole. Soon after the people, ââ¬Å"cut down some trees, [tie] them with rope and [make] a fence which they put around the holeâ⬠(2). Sbrocchi 2 This symbolizes that the villagers already know the hole is a bad thing and they need to protect people from it by building a fence around it, much like a pit bull or Rottweiler; also this is foreshadowing because the hole ends up being a dangerous th ing. Perhaps greatest moment of symbolism in the story comes at the last line, when it is revealed to the reader that all that is dumped in the hole is going to rain down on the city, because a builder is taking his break when, ââ¬Å"a small pebble skimmed by him and fell onà past. The man however, was gazing in idle reverie at the cityââ¬â¢s skyline growing evermore beautiful, and he failed to notice (4). The theme of the whole story is explained in the builderââ¬â¢s actions, the builder symbolizes humans as a whole, they ignore the future threat that the pebble symbolizes and look out at the ââ¬Å"successâ⬠that they have created. Irony is a powerful tool in literature that is used to get a message through to the reader. In this story it is used in many ways to show the stubbornness of mankind to only focus on the today not the tomorrow. Near the beginning of the story before the young man is about to throw a pebble in the hole an old man warns him by saying ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëyou might bring down a curse on us. Lay off,ââ¬â¢ [â⬠¦] but the younger one energetically [throws] the pebble in.â⬠(2). This is so ironic because in the end the older man was right, it did bring down a curse on them, all that garbage came right back down on them. This is so important because it is exactly the theme of the story, the young man failed to recognize the threat in front of him, he set it aside so he could have his fun right now regardless of what the future may bring and the future brought evil, which was self-inflicted. The panicle of irony in the story that really throws the theme at the reader is when the narrator says ââ¬Å"Everyone disliked thinking about the eventual consequencesâ⬠That is Sbrocchi 3 literally the theme of the story, it is ironic because the eventual consequences that everyone thought would come many years later ended up right at the doorstep of the village in not long at all, and these consequences came in a form much worse than what anyone could have ever expected. There is a lesson to be learned from this story and it is that if a situation arises for something good to come in the now, in the today, but it raises problems for the tomorrow, those problems must be dealt with in the today and not pushed aside because they are unpleasant to think about. No matter how great a success something may bring it could all be in vein if the same thing will also bring pain and suffering in the future; it will not be a success at all, it will be a giant failure. In the story, something fictional happens to the villagers, but things just as bad or worse will come from actions in real life, they just may not be as obvious or come asà fast. Humans like to focus on the good in situations not in the possible bad, this has to change.
